GAYO Arabica coffee is one of the best coffee in the world. This coffee grows in the Gayoland area at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level.
The data released by Aceh Plantation and Agriculture Agency show that the Central Aceh district has a coffee plantation of 49,835 hectares with a production of 34,609 tons per year. Meanwhile, Bener Meriah district has a coffee plantation area of 46,273 hectares with a production of 29,101 tons per year.
Currently, the productivity of Gayo coffee is only around 750 kg per hectare. In fact, the potential productivity of Gayo Arabica coffee can reach 2,000 kg per hectare. This shows that the productivity level of Gayo coffee is still far from its potential.
Since 2015, Redelong Institute and Rumah Berkelanjutan in collaboration with the local government and universities (the University of Gajah Putih Takengon and the University of Syiah Kuala), have already been involved in the process of strengthening coffee farmers’ capacity to increase productivity, and improve the good agricultural practices and sustainable coffee farming in the field.
Specifically, Redelong Institute and Rumah Berkelanjutan provide assistance to 5 Perhutanan Sosial coffee farmers’ groups in the Gayoland, as part of the long-term program in strengthening the coffee conservation. This program is also intended to contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as improve its sustainability.
